Reworked collection | Destroyers/Builders
For Destroyers/Builders, Bea Joppen created the upholstery for the Reworked Chair and Bench, designed by Linde Freya Tangelder. The collection brings together brushed aluminium, hand-lacquered cotton and white bronze, with each material contributing a distinct surface and structure.
At the centre of Reworked is an exploration of shelter. Tangelder draws a connection between clothing, furniture and architecture: different layers that surround the body and offer protection and comfort. In the chair and bench, this idea takes shape through a curved aluminium shell and textile elements that fold across its surface.
The outlines of these soft panels originate in architectural floor plans. Symmetrical layouts are divided into fragments, becoming unexpected, asymmetrical shapes. Translated into cotton, these shapes introduce folds, overlapping layers and edges that extend beyond the metal structure.
The hand-lacquered finish gives the cotton a particular surface character. Small white bronze feet add another texture, retaining the marks of the wax forms from which they were cast. Together, the materials reveal different ways of making, from shaping metal to treating fabric by hand.
Our contribution focused on the upholstered elements. Their contours are central to the appearance of both pieces, making the textile work an integral part of the design. The project reflects the experimental side of our atelier, where upholstery takes on new forms through collaboration with designers.
